DT Weekend: "Girls Girls Girls, Austin’s only all-female improv troupe, welcomed an unusual addition to their cast this month: a boy. Their new musical comedy, “The Boys of Summer,” explores the differences between male and female comedians."
"The Girls began performing together in 1998, making them the longest-running improv troupe in Austin. The troupe started out as Rock Star Girls Galactica 3000, a branch of the original co-ed troupe, Austin Theatresports. Rock Star Girls performed “no boys allowed” shows under the leadership of Amy McCurdy. The members enjoyed working together so much that they officially became their own artistic collective, Girls Girls Girls, in 2003. The Girls have since grown to include an 11-member cast — eight female improv performers and three musicians. Their routine originally focused on a mix of long- and short-form improvisation."
"Their big break came when the Girls began opening their improv shows with dance numbers. These short opening acts quickly grew into full-fledged musical numbers that developed into The Rock Opera in 2004. A unique creation that combined improvisation with the traditional stage musical, The Rock Opera proved to be a huge success with audiences."
